England Squash National Schools Competition
A 4-1 win against KES Birmingham saw the U15 boys progress to the final 16 in the England Squash National Schools competition.
After an uneventful jaunt up the M5, the boys arrived well rested and ready to perform. Ben Spink (SU Re), at number one string, went on first. Following a slow start – adjusting to a very cold court – he found his form and started getting onto the ball early to pressurize his opponent and to avoid getting stuck in the dreaded back corners where the ball was dropping like a lead balloon. Meanwhile, on the other court, Ned Corfield (C2 Re), Louis Dessalles (B1 Sh) and Sebastian Horlock (SU Sh), at strings three, four and five respectively, saw off their opponents with comfortable 3-0 victories. Spink fought back admirably to level the match at 2-2, and nearly had it in the fifth, losing narrowly, 8-11 – a great effort against an experienced opponent.
Hugh Norman (SU Sh) rounded off the afternoon with a good win at number two, and produced the shot of the afternoon – a cross-court forehand volley which rolled out of the backhand nick – one he’ll remember for a while.
Well done boys – another step in the right direction.
