Marlborough has new National Champions! On their home courts this Sunday, Ibby Lee (NC L6) and Anna Laakkonen (MO L6) defeated all comers to win the National U18 Championships.
They saw off competition from Malvern, Rugby, Alleyn’s, Eastbourne and finally Christ’s Hospital to cap a great season with the biggest trophy going. Their standard of play throughout was simply exceptional, and the victory comes as a richly-deserved reward for the disciplined and purposeful way they have trained and prepared over the whole season. Both girls have broken into the top 20 of the national adult rankings. As U17s, they must now aim to retain the titles next year!
U15s Kirsten Bell (MO Re) and Lena Barton (MM Re) strove to follow their lead in the Junior event. Also a year young for the event, they made their presence felt in the latter stages of the main draw, playing some terrific Fives.
Six U14 girls also took their bow on the national stage, with Gigi Chambers (MO Sh) the most successful; having come second in her pool, she won the singles plate, then teamed up with Tash Connell (MO Sh) to win the plate doubles.
In all, a very enjoyable and very satisfying end to the season.
