Pupil Achievements: Lent Term

A selection of pupil achievements from the Lent Term…


Stasi Knight (CO U6) captained Wales U18s hockey team in their 2-1 win against Ireland and she will continue as captain for the next test against Switzerland and Scotland over the Easter weekend.


Congratulations to Molly Gibbins (CO L6), who came 29th out of a field of 301 runners in the Senior Girls’ National Cross Country championship in Norwich.

Well done to Harriet Eyles (MM Re), who won two singles titles and was runner-up in two doubles events at the recent Salisbury Junior Open.

Congratulations to Zharif Shahryn (CO Hu) who came ninth in the Epee in the National Championships. He also won the U16 Foil and Epee trophies at the Wiltshire Championships last weekend.

The Salisbury Classical Reading Competition took place on Tuesday 7th March, where pupils read aloud a prepared passage of Latin or Greek. Congratulations to Evie McVeigh (MM Hu) for first prize in the Intermediate Latin category, Peter Corti (LI L6) for finishing second in Senior Greek and Helena Mackie (MO U6) who came third in Senior Latin Verse.

The U14 girls’ hockey team finished fifth at the U14 Investec Schools Hockey National finals, held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Olympic Park. Click here to read more of this great achievement.

Well done to Bruno Espinosa de los Monteros (BH Re), Worcester Bawden (C3 U6), Ben Cooper (SU Hu), Erik Dell (CO U6) and Oscar Powell (C2 Hu) who all performed superbly, as the golf team finished runner-up on the school’s return to the West of England Public School Golf Championships at Burnham & Berrow.

Congratulations to Beth Ransome (IH Re), who has won the U15 short story competition for the 25th and very last Wills Writing Awards competition.


Max Fillingham (TU L6) represented England in the ‘European Karate Kata Championships’ held in Sweden and secured the bronze medal in the U18 male section.

Congratulations to Claudie Grainger (IH Re) who has been selected for the U15A team to represent the South Region at the Regional Lacrosse Tournament.  This is a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work that she puts in.  Not only is her work ethic at training exemplary, but she undertakes additional practice in her own time and is fully committed to developing her fitness to help her be even more dynamic on the pitch, and stay injury free.

There was success in the British Biology Olympiad, with Eloise Newman (PR U6) winning a gold, Fenella Bennett (IH U6) and Lucy Hudson (EL U6) winning silvers and Harry MacColl (LI U6), Sophia Hamilton-Russell (MM U6) and Martha Franks (MM U6) winning bronzes. A further six pupils achieved a highly commended and four achieved a commended. Well done to all.

At the South West Schools’ Cross-Country Championships in Truro on Saturday 4th February, Molly Gibbins (CO L6) finished 12th out of 56 runners in the Senior Girls race. Sophie Smith (DA Sh) was 46 out of 57 runners in the Junior Girls race. Both qualify for the English National Schools Championships in Norwich on 18th March.

Congratulations to Henry Adamson (LI Re) who has been chosen for the Scotland Exiles U16 Camp at Sheffield on Sunday 19th February.

The Junior Colts were winners at the Magdalen College Sevens tournament on Sunday 5th February.

A win over KES Birmingham saw the U15 boys progress to the final 16 of the England Squash National Schools competition.

The U14 girls’ hockey team (pictured) have qualified for the National Finals – becoming the first girls’ hockey team to do so in the history of the College.

Sara Kirkwood (EL Sh) and Allie Kirkwood (DA Sh), Sophie Powell (IH Sh), Honor Mills (EL Sh) and Molly Marvin (NC Sh) have been selected to trial for the English Lacrosse Talent Pathway.


Giles Hocking (C1 Sh) and Freddie Hazlitt (C1 Hu) have been training with England Hockey Performance Centre.

Well done to Tom Hunt (C1 Re) who has been selected to represent GB on the Jersey boat in an America’s Cup sailing event in June.

At the end of the Michaelmas Term, Billy Mead (C1 U6) won the Renny Cup at the Queens’ Public Schools Rackets Championships, coming back from two sets down to lift the trophy.

In rugby, Henry Adamson (LI Re), Chris Freeman (SU Re) and Arthur Hardwick (TU Re) played for Dorset & Wilts against Berkshire at Maidenhead on Wednesday 11th January.

Congratulations to Rosie Pembroke (EL Re) on her selection for the 2017 Young Vipers Cricket squad of 14 girls.

Archie Griffin (C3 Hu) played for the Welsh Exiles over the weekend of 14th January whilst he and Will Cook (SU Hu) have also been selected to play for Somerset.

Molly Gibbins (CO L6) won the Wiltshire Senior Girls Cross Country Championship at the weekend (14/15 January) and goes through to the South West Region competition on Saturday 4th February in Truro. Sophie Smith (DA Sh) was fifth in the U15s and also qualifies for the SW Championships. Lara Smyth-Osbourne (IH Sh) was 18th in the U15s.
