Chamber Music Concert: St George’s Church

The musical life at Marlborough was further enriched last Friday by an exciting new venture masterminded by our new Head of Strings, Mr Hector Scott.

Twelve pupil musicians showcased their talents in a chamber music concert at St George’s Church, Preshute, a visually and acoustically appropriate venue for this type of ensemble playing, and a wonderful way for our pupils to share their skill with the local community.

The programme of baroque music, which featured soloists and instrumentalists taken almost exclusively from the Lower Sixth and lower school years, was varied and imaginative. George Nicholson (C3 Hu) and Ben Spink (SU Hu) opened with Manfredini’s Concerto for two trumpets in C major, beginning the concert with a sense of regality. Our two Lower Sixth cellists, Luke Smith (CO L6) and James Wright (C1 L6), gave a remarkable display of virtuosity and collaboration in Vivaldi’s Concerto for two cellos in G minor, RV 531. The concert concluded with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, with Sarah Mattinson (MM U6) taking centre stage on the flute. This well-loved piece was played with style and vitality, and the central movement was shaped particularly beautifully.

Many thanks and congratulations to all involved in this novel and rewarding event.
