Careers Speed Dating
The Careers ‘Hundreds’ Speed Dating Event’, just 24 hours prior to us making our A Level choices, was a great chance to speak to a variety of people about their careers. With the exception of one man (who worked in cyber security) all the visitors were Old Marlburians, and were in jobs as diverse as theatre production, law, product design and education.
Our five-minute talk with each candidate consisted of an introduction by the Old Marlburian, a short synopsis of their career path to date, and a chance to ask any relevant questions. Speed dating isn’t something we’re familiar with, being in our GCSE year, so it took a bit of getting used to, but by the end we were more comfortable with the format.
It was very interesting to hear from people who have taken A levels, gone to University, taken gap years and found out what they want to do with their lives. The message conveyed from the majority was to pick a career that you really enjoy. For example, one woman had thought she was destined to be a violinist. However, after taking a course at the London Academy of Music, she realized she wasn’t really enjoying performing and decided teaching was what she really enjoyed.
This experience, along with many other examples, showed us that it is of utmost importance to work very hard at something that interests you, and not to worry if you are not entirely sure what you want to do with your life yet.
We are very grateful to the Guidance Department for organizing this opportunity to consolidate our A level choices, and get guidelines on life post-Marlborough.
