About

The Marlborough College Athletics Club has a well established history at the College with individual trophies dating from the 19th Century. Today, it is run as a club for boys and girls at Under 15, Under 17 & Under 19 levels, accommodating all pupils at the College. The training week s scheduled around performance athletes and recreational athletes, with performance athletes benefiting from excellent links with the Strength & Conditioning team. With the basic concepts of run, throw and jump making up the foundational skills of all sports, athletics offer a unique environment for all pupils to develop their athletic potential. Athletes at Marlborough also benefit from a highly qualified network of supporting coaching staff, both internally as members of the Common Room and externally, including double Olympian Team GB high jumper Ben Challenger.

Facilities

Marlborough has one of the most beautifully situated all weather 400 metre tracks in the country watched over by the white horse on Granham Hill. The track was re-laid in 2001 and boasts a newly-refurbished pavilion and natural viewing points from all around the track. The track also houses two shot put rings, a long jump and triple jump pit, high jump bed, throwing cage and two javelin approach throwing areas.

Matches

As well as hosting invitational meetings for up to eight schools across the entire Summer term on a Saturday, Marlborough also hosts the Kennet Area Trials, the annual Mayor’s Cup match versus St. John’s, Marlborough and the County Pentathlon Championships. In recent years Marlborough has also branched out on away fixtures, with regular invites to invitational events at Harrow and the Lord Burghley Trophy hosted by Eton.

Most years, around 20-30 athletes progress to the Individual Wiltshire County Championships, with between five and ten to the South West Championships held in Exeter. Outstanding individuals will make it to the English Schools Athletics Association Championships at the end of term, which in recent years has even been live streamed.

The hugely anticipated internal Babcock (Remove) and House Athletics Championships (Shell, Remove & Lower Sixth) are held at the end of the Summer term, with the latter closing the entire College academic year.
