Griffith Society

Sports Scholar at Marlborough College

Every sports scholar will automatically become a member of the Griffith Society. The Griffith Society was named after MG Griffith (C3 1957-62) who played England Schools Cricket and Hockey, captained Sussex CCC and played Hockey for England and GB. It consists of highly motivated and very able sporting pupils who have the potential to gain representative honours while at Marlborough College.


1. Ongoing technical, physiological and psychological support through regular weekly contact with the expert teachers and coaches already employed by the College.

2. Some flexibility to allow him/her to visit expert external coaches as part of maintaining contact with a county, regional or national development squad.

3. The annual Dunford Lecture which is an inspirational presentation given by a visiting speaker who is an outstanding sporting performer.

4. Meetings each term which might also involve a talk by an expert on a particular sports-related topic.

5. Excellent and continually improving facilities.

6. A sports mentor who monitors the development and progression of each individual sports scholar and ensures a sensible balance of lifestyle at the College is maintained.

7. Fitness testing in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms

Skill Level

  • To maintain and foster a positive and winning attitude amongst his/her peers so acting as a role model on and off the sporting arena
  • To always strive to maximise his/her physical, technical and mental potential in training, practice and competition
  • To remain coachable, through proactively seeking advice for continued self-improvement
  • To set and reach the agreed physical and technical targets as discussed in consultation with his/her sports mentor
  • To reach agreed academic targets as set by his/her HM and/or house tutor
