The Biology Society welcomed members of the London Air Ambulance Service - also known as the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) - to introduce pupils to the exciting work of the helicopter crews, ground staff and medical teams who, together, provide a life-saving service. Dr. Gareth Davies' vivid account of what the crew can expect on a day-to-day basis engendered a sense of no little respect and reinforced the importance of a service that is only partially financed by the NHS, relying instead, on private sponsorship and charitable donations.
