His work focused on the rhythms and sounds that were present in his Trinidadian upbringing. Bouncing his words like the trumpets in a ska band, he punctuated his sentences with the laid back waltz of reggae music.

Claiming that, for a poet, sounds sometimes become more important than meaning, he provided us with an experience similar to listening to an old Duke Reid record; yet, his depiction of Trinidadian life allowed sounds to accentuate meaning. The audience was soon providing a base line of “hide the magic” over which he pronounced the melody through the words of a poem.
