The Avebury to Marlborough Walk

 More Recent News »

The Shell (Year 9) divided into two groups to walk, in turn, the six miles from Avebury to Marlborough over the Marlborough Downs. Both groups enjoyed exceptionally good weather allowing them to see some of the finest scenery in Wiltshire bathed in autumnal sunshine.

A Sense of History and Place

The walk began at the 4,500 year old stone circle complex at Avebury; it is one of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe.

More About Avebury

The route back to Marlborough passed many thousands of sarsen stones, formed from sheets of silicia millions of years ago. It was from this area that the largest stones of Stonehenge were dragged, some twenty miles southward, to complete the famous circle there.

Designed to help create a sense of history and place, the walk became the focus of some work carried out in Shell 'Form' lessons.

Pupils had their energy levels restored along the way by a welcome stop for donuts and the number of blister patches required was encouragingly small.
