Hockey is the major sport for boys in the Lent Term. The game was first played at Marlborough College in 1874. There has always been a close link between Marlborough Hockey and the Varsity Match; nine Marlburians played in the first Cambridge-Oxford clash in 1890. No fewer than thirty six of the Cambridge and Oxford captains have been Marlborough pupils.

The teams enjoy a strong fixture list against schools in the region, playing
matches on Saturday afternoons and some Thursdays before holidays or exeat
weekends. The College regularly fields seventeen teams for school matches.
The 1st XI (under 18) and Colts (under 16) enter the National Schools'
Hockey Competition annually.

The 2006 XI completed their match schedule undefeated at home, and the 1st Colts reached the Divisional stage of the National Schools' Hockey Tournament, losing in the Semi-Finals.
