In July 2006, three Lower Sixth pupils (Annabelle Chellew, Charles Dessain and Alexandra Dowling) joined a Brandt Group party co-led by an Old Marlburienne, Charlotte Gibson.
Over a four week period they undertook a building project at the Islamic School in Gunjur. Working six days a week in hot and trying conditions, they had to cope with a variety of problems, not least of which was a particularly cruel tropical storm that broke just after they had redecorated the school and before they had had time to construct a new roof!
Ultimately, the venture was a success; the school was refurbished and, very importantly, a team of young people from the West had demonstrated how they could cooperate and work with the predominantly Muslim community in Gunjur. |
