The Brandt Group

The College enjoys close links with the Marlborough Brandt Group, a charity founded in 1981 in response to the Brandt Commission Report which advocated increased contact between the industrialised and developing worlds. In 1982 the Brandt Group established a community link between Marlborough and Gunjur in The Gambia; facilitating people to people exchanges is at the core of the charity's work.

Building Work in The Gambia

In July 2006, three Lower Sixth pupils (Annabelle Chellew, Charles Dessain and Alexandra Dowling) joined a Brandt Group party co-led by an Old Marlburienne, Charlotte Gibson.

Over a four week period they undertook a building project at the Islamic School in Gunjur. Working six days a week in hot and trying conditions, they had to cope with a variety of problems, not least of which was a particularly cruel tropical storm that broke just after they had redecorated the school and before they had had time to construct a new roof!

Ultimately, the venture was a success; the school was refurbished and, very importantly, a team of young people from the West had demonstrated how they could cooperate and work with the predominantly Muslim community in Gunjur.
