Lacrosse Tour to Spain

Having enjoyed a successful start to the season, and with the last lacrosse tour occurring four years ago, it seemed fitting that twenty-one excited lacrosse-playing girls should be heading for sunny Spain over the Michaelmas half term exeat for a short tour. We were based at a hotel just outside Valencia, and enjoyed the benefit of some top class coaching from current international players. We tested our skills and match play against club sides and a Welsh national team.

We relished the chance to train on immaculate pitches in shorts and T-shirts, working hard under the inspirational coaching of Laura Warren (member of the World All Star team and current vice captain of Wales.) Individual skills and team tactics were practised and developed – and the improvement over the five days was remarkable. With such a role model, we were motivated into trying out different “tricks” and strategies: self-confidence grew with the mastering of each new skill.

We applied our newfound skills in competitive matches against the Wirral, a Welsh national team, and a combination of the two squads. Each match was competitive and played in excellent spirit but the highlight was the 6-6 draw against the Welsh team. Discipline, self-belief, determination, and a willingness to chase every ball, were all in abundance; coherent teamwork produced the finest performance of this season.

Our hotel was luxurious boasting its own health spa! A “rather cold” outdoor swimming pool proved refreshing after the heat of the training fields and helped to stave off those sore, stiff muscles. We enjoyed our afternoon relaxation sessions in the sauna, jacuzzi, and steam room, further aids to recovery. It was a tough life!
