Planet Earth, a series devoted to documenting the behaviour of animals in their natural habitat, has been watched by 100 million people worldwide and has recently sold its millionth DVD.
Mr Wilson himself spent three years in Pakistan filming snow leopards; this animal he described as representing the ‘holy grail’ of nature filming. The extraordinary footage achieved broke barriers in terms of our understanding of the behavioural patterns of these endangered creatures. He talked about the new filming technology that allowed his team to achieve such amazing cinematography including the helicopter “steady cam” which can film animals from up to 200 metres away.
Mr Wilson also spent fourteen hours a day, seven days a week for sixteen weeks filming the amazing, yet absurd, birds of paradise. He showed us some clips of the five minutes of footage he obtained from his sixteen weeks of effort – effort that, nevertheless, seemed to be justified by the stunning results achieved.
Planet Earth involved filming in 202 locations and for over 2,000 days. As if that wasn’t enough, Jeff Wilson is now engaged with his latest project, Frozen Earth. |
