The Remove Poetry Slam

 More Recent News »

Smoke, lights, music and fancy dress: the Ellis Theatre had it all for this spectacular and most poetic of events. Individuals and groups from the Remove (Year 10) performed their own poems written specifically for the event and were judged by a panel of judges and their peers in the audience.

Poetry and Much More
Polished recitations and semi-improvised acting gave rise to a lively contest with plenty of audience participation and sparring from a panel of eclectic judges.

Coco Lloyd, Olivia Henson and Izzy Ohlson won the competition after their poem, Brighton, with its carefully and expertly executed syncopated rhythms, pushed them through to the final round of short-listed performances. George Carter and Chris Hinezen grabbed second place with their witty Orange Rap that borrowed its inspiration from the theme of the evening: orange.

Mr Walters hosted the evening, showing off a range of talents to suggest a further career might await him, and Mr McCann provided beautifully timed support on percussion.

The poetry addressed topics as diverse as gravity and a tempting burger. George Stewart-Lockhart, dressed half as man and half as woman, provided a one-person variant on the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet; and Josh Horwood took us on a journey through a night as a jazz performer in America, his saxophone serving as musical instrument and other timely props.
