On the weekend of the 10th of November, the girls of Mill Mead boarding house organised a sponsored 'readathon' to raise money for 'Send a Cow', a Christian charity that enables poor farmers in Africa to become self-reliant by providing them with livestock, training and advice.

Forty girls from across the yeargroups read as pairs or in threes, in one hour shifts, thereby covering the twenty-four hour period.

A Chamber of Secrets

Twenty-four hours was just enough time to read the first three volumes of the Harry Potter series. The event was certainly memorable: when else would you find someone reading The Chamber of Secrets out loud in the middle of the Mill Mead Common Room at 3am in the morning?

Send a Cow

The Saturday night reading instilled an aura of calm and relaxation in the House, with everyone in their pyjamas drinking hot chocolate and wrapped up in duvets. It was hard to leave such a peaceful scene and two or three individuals spent the whole night in the Common Room.

Neverthelss, morale was surprisingly high on Sunday morning. Several teachers called in to hear the readers and the Master was there for the final stages.

The event raised in the region of £1,500 for the charity, Send a Cow.
