The Anglican tradition of faith and worship remains an important element in the life of the School, but there is no attempt to impose beliefs. Students are encouraged to think for themselves, while developing sensitivity to religious and spiritual issues and respect for the beliefs and values of others.
On certain occasions the whole School meets as a community in Chapel; these include the first and last day of each term, the first Sunday of each term, Ash Wednesday and Ascension Day.
On other Sundays there is Holy Communion at 8.30am, Sung Eucharist at 10.15am and an Address at 6.30pm. Pupils in the Shell attend the Sung Eucharist. In subsequent years the range of options widens, to affirm the importance of individual choice, while still requiring some commitment.
The only pupils excused attendance are non-Anglicans who choose to attend the appropriate service in a local church; in Marlborough there are St Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Christchurch - Methodist and United Reformed - and a Friends’ Meeting House.
Pupils of other religions, like other members of the School, can attend the Evening Address. They will also be given support in maintaining the requirements of their faith.
The Shell (Year 9) has services during the week. On Tuesdays they have a short service in their own House, taken by a senior pupil. On Thursdays they have a service in Chapel.
There are regular services in the more intimate surroundings of the Crypt Chapel, and this also provides a convenient place for private prayer or meditation.
Communion is also celebrated once a term in each House.
Compline is said in Chapel on Wednesday evenings and there is also a Bible study meeting on Tuesdays and an informal gathering on Thursdays
Pupils can be prepared for Confirmation, and there is a Service each year in the Chapel. It has been the custom for pupils to be confirmed in either the Remove (Year 10) or Lower Sixth year, but they may choose any year.
Preparation begins early in the Michaelmas Term.
Roman Catholics considering Confirmation should contact Father Thomas or Mr Fraser.
