In October, pupils studying English in the Lower Sixth headed for the Globe Theatre for some workshops and to see a production of Glyn Maxwell's Liberty.

The Great Globe Itself

Account by James Lloyd

Traffic stalled our progress through London but we made it to the Globe Theatre in time to explore Shakespeare's historic building. We split into groups, each group being assigned an RSC actor to serve as a guide who then took us back in time and uncovered for us some of the intricacies of performance in Elizabethan England. The ensuing workshop soon had us exercising our vocal chords and experimenting with dramatic technique.

The afternoon performance of Glyn Maxwell’s Liberty found in us a mixed response. Many applauded the humorous scripting and the passion with which the actors performed, whilst others felt the production lacked the lustre it deserved. Perhaps the Globe is not, after all, the best space for a play such as this.
