We aim to give all our pupils a confidence in Mathematics, making the subject enjoyable and teaching pupils at a pace and ability level suitable to them. We try to create a positive working atmosphere teaching good work habits by example and explanation. Modern technology is employed appropriately both as an aid to teaching and to enhance learning.

After initial setting, in the first half term Shell (Year 9) pupils are taught three topics: Simultaneous Equations, Trigonometry and Algebra. All pupils then move on to the IGCSE textbook.
In the Remove (Year 10) pupils work through the IGCSE textbooks but at different paces according to ability level. Some sets will take the IGCSE in year 10 and tackle AS level work in year 11 by studying for the Additional Mathematics examination.
There are normally nine sets studying mathematics in the Sixth Form. Pupils move through material at an appropriate pace and in a suitable style. Flexibility is the key as we offer both the AS and the A2 level in Mathematics in the normal way but in addition allow some to finish the A2 level in four terms which enables them to follow four subjects to A level without too much examining in their final summer.
Those who wish to study for more than the one mathematics A level can choose between one and a half, two or even two and a half A levels in the subject often having a choice of units to match their future aspirations.
In addition,we offfer Mathematics Higher level as part of the International Baccalaureate as well as two Standard courses: Mathematics and Mathematical Studies.
We enter around 150 students a year in to each of the Senior and Intermediate UK Mathematical Challenges which sees bright pupils from different year groups able to compete in the same competition. Sibling interest is often a strong motivation!
Oxbridge lessons start during the Lent Term of the Lower Sixth: initially, we tackle a broad base of interesting and challenging ideas but later focus more specifically on the Oxford entrance examinations and then the STEP examinations for Cambridge.
A tremendous amount of individual help is offered outside normal lessons, all members of the department giving willingly of their time to help solve particular problems. Regular surgeries are held and as examinations approach the department is very much “Open House”.
