Classics is a popular and flourishing subject at Marlborough, and we aim to instil in all our students an enjoyment and appreciation of the rich linguistic, artistic and cultural legacy of the classical world.

The department is staffed by six teachers and occupies five well-equipped classrooms in the Languages Centre. It enjoys the use of its own departmental library and an excellent cast collection of Greek Sculpture.

All pupils study Latin in the Shell, and the higher sets are given the opportunity to try Greek; around sixty will typically continue Latin to GCSE, and up to twenty study Greek. In the 6th form we offer Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilization at A level.

Numbers are healthy and every year our best classicists win places at Oxbridge. The department also runs a popular biennial trip to the ancient sites of Greece and enjoys success in district reading competitions.
