Introducing the 1843 Society

The 1843 Society has been established in recognition of those that have indicated their intention to contribute by leaving a legacy to Marlborough College.  The society is named after the year the College was founded as we believe that members share the same values and philosophies as the group of Anglican Clergymen who set up the College to support the edcation of their sons.

During those early days money was found, outside fee income, to support the building of the Master's Lodge, the Chapel and B House.  In fact, most of the developments at Marlborough have been provided through such philanthropy.  Despite that start, and contrary to popular belief, the College is not well endowed.  Endowment investments provide less than 2% of our income.  The College therefore has to spend its fee income on staff, education, maintenance and the general running of the school.  Fee income has never provided for major capital developments or contributed toward endowment funding for the future.

After a number of appeals during the last hundred years, Council has decided that it is in the long-term interests of the College to build up a £10million endowment fund capable of supporting the College's future capital requirements and assisting with scholarships and bursaries to enable young people who are academically able, but financially disadvantaged, to come to Marlborough.

The Marlborough College Foundation is to provide that essential long-term financial support for the College.  It aims to build upon the College's history of generous philanthropic giving by encouraging and fostering the interest and financial support of OMs, parents and friends of the College.

To become a member of the Society all you have to do is inform us that you are making a legacy to the College.  Because of this commitment to support the long term vision for Marlborough we want to put members in a priviledged position to understand the latest developments and thinking about the future of the College.  We will invite members back to the College annually, to hear the Master and Chairman of the Foundation speak and to enjoy a lunch together afterwards.
