Giving is a personal decision and the Foundation does not presume to advocate how or when a donor may wish to offer support. All we can do is help by suggesting ways in which support can be given, and which will be to the best advantage of the Foundation. Donors are then in a position to decide on what is the most appropriate method for them.
Gift Aid
For single gifts, the Gift Aid scheme might be most suitable. The advantage of a Gift Aid donation is that all the tax can be reclaimed by the Marlborough College Trust and by the donor (if he or she is a higher rate taxpayer) in one year. There is no minimum or maximum size of gift but it must be made out of taxable income and the donor must be a UK resident.
Deed of Covenant
For regular gifts, a Deed of Covenant is the most beneficial method and the Inland Revenue has now made the process much simpler. Moreover, the tax advantages are the same as for Gift Aid donations.
Legacies
Making a bequest in a will is a tax efficient method of giving, as it is free of inheritance tax and can greatly benefit the process of estate planning. There are several ways in which a legacy donation can be made when writing or amending your will and we have a produced a detailed guide which is available from the Appeal Office at the College.
Shares
The donation of stocks and shares is seldom used as a means of supporting a charity in this country. But it is the most popular form of donation in the USA. Exempt from Capital Gains Tax, such gifts are very welcome and can be a major source of support for the Foundation.
Gifts from the USA
Tax-deductible gifts from US taxpayers can be made through Marlborough College Inc. a reciprocal arrangement with British Schools and Universities Foundation Inc., an IRS registered tax efficient Charity in the US.
Regular donations
The simplest way of making a regular donation is through a standing order at your bank. The Foundation Office has forms available to enable you to contribute in this way.
Other tax effective ways of giving
As gifts to charities are not subject to Capital Gains Tax or Capital Transfer Tax, donors may consider making a bequest of cash investments or other assets, all of which would be free of Capital Transfer Tax on death.

We hope we can count on the continued help of all who have supported the Foundation in the past and look, of course, to the support of parents of new students at Marlborough whose children will be able to take advantage of the new facilities.
