Meeting the Needs of the Future

Marlborough has approximately 840 students, and it is our policy to ensure that we deliver our education to the highest standard. To match that we need to ensure that the facilities match our educational aspirations. That can only been done by investing in existing facilities and equipment to ensure they meet those standards. The efforts of the Foundation will support the requirements of the College in the years to come by building its reserves to support needs as and when they occur.

There are, of course, many facilities that the College would like to provide or improve. These change as the College continues to develop and the Foundation will maintain an up to date list so that potential donors will know the sort of initiatives their generosity will support.

However, first and foremost, the Foundation will help appropriate students attend the College who would not otherwise be able to afford to do so.

Secondly the Foundation will support the College in investing in academic facilities or equipment to enable it to provide a first-rate, education.

Thirdly, it will support investment in those extra curricular activities–sport, outdoor activities, music, drama–that are so important to the development of well-rounded and educated students.

Projects for immediate attention include:

Astro Turf Pitches

Marlborough has a very strong sporting tradition, with an excellent record in competition with other schools. Potentially strong sportsmen and women are given expert coaching and every encouragement to develop their abilities. The all weather pitches are multi functional being used for hockey, tennis, netball and football, depending on the season. However, with constant use, they are nearing the end of their useful life and will have to be replaced to ensure the quality of surface for the future.

Refurbishment of the Chapel organ

The Chapel is a beautiful building built in the Victorian Gothic style. In addition to religious services, the Chapel is also used for recitals and concerts. Each year there is a performance of one of the great oratorios by the Choral Society as well as many other performance events. One of the great treasures of the Chapel is an exceptionally fine organ, built in 1878 by Forster & Andrews of Hull on which students can be taught to play. Sadly, however, despite being rebuilt in 1955 by Norman & Beard the years have taken their toll and the organ is now in need of complete overhaul and refurbishment.

The Memorial Hall

The Hall, which was built as a memorial to those Marlburians who died in the First World War was officially opened on 23rd May 1925 and since then has been a magnificent addition to Marlborough's facilities and one of its most prominent buildings. It accommodates the whole school and is used for concerts and plays, in addition to assemblies. Over three quarters of a century later however, more repair is necessary including a major redevelopment of backstage.

Since the creation of the Marlborough College Foundation, and with the generous help of our friends, we have achieved a great deal. Looking to the future, we have other exciting projects and ongoing developments, which will further enhance the life of the College.
