European Day of Languages

Category: Academic

26th September is the European Day of Languages, an event we marked by inviting Year 8 students from several local schools to compete in a Languages Quiz.

Which country has the most native speakers of Spanish? What would a Mancunian do with a 'chuddy'? What proportion of the world’s languages are estimated to disappear by the year 3000? Wrestling with these and other questions, last year's champions St Francis put up a stout defence of their title but were pipped by Downe House and Horris Hill. Downe correctly identified that one of our L6 was speaking Flemish, and this last-minute stroke of brilliance meant a tie-breaker was needed. By distinguishing Korean from Japanese, Horris won the day - gratulacje to their boys and medelijden to the others.
