About Timothy Betjeman

Born in New York City in 1982 and based in London since 2006, Betjeman studied Visual Art and Philosophy at the University of Chicago (BA) before going on to a post-graduate diploma in Drawing from The Royal Drawing School in London, on a two-year bursary award.

Betjeman's paintings are underpinned by strong draughtsmanship, reflecting daily life in and around his studio in Camberwell, South London and his former home of New York. There is a fascination, evident in his subjects (always painted en plein air), with dense clusters of activity to be found within wide open spaces, both urban and rural, and the way in which these conflicting dynamics can be reconciled in paint even before they are reconciled in the mind.

His work has appeared in recent years in The Independent, Country Life, and The Lady, and is in the collections of HRH the Prince of Wales, Clare College, Cambridge University, the Moritz-Heyman Foundation, and in various private collections.
