Short Film Competition 2013

Category: Art

Students from Marlborough College have once again excelled in the field of short live action film and animation. This year, twelve entries were screened in the Garnett Room to an appreciative audience and judging panel.

Loosely based around the theme of ‘Fantasy or Reality’, entries ranged from Edward Biggs (B1 L6) engaging time lapse short to India Gaul’s (El U6) socially observant work ‘Fantasy/Reality’.

Our Artist-in-Residence Ian Wilkins, local photographer Fran Smith and members of the student body represented the judging panel. A well deserved First Prize was awarded to Cecile Llewelyn-Bowen (LI U6) for 'Passion of Psyche'. This film was applauded for Cecile’s impressive mix of dramatic live action work, collaged backgrounds and skillfully animated sequences.

Second place went to Saul Mallinson’s (PR L6) highly experimental and dexterous microscope film ‘The Algae Forest’. This work was outstanding as Saul’s purposeful, jerky footage was also successfully accompanied by his own highly experimental soundscape. Third place was shared between two short films; ‘Supernatural’ created by Theo Fetherstone (C1 Re) and Freddie Brookes Smith (C1 Re), and ‘Surfed Out’ by Florian D’Oelsnitz (BH L6). Finally, Harry Keville (TU L6) received the Audience Award for his thought provoking work ‘Edge of Trauma’.

All students who submitted films are to be commended for the impressive amount of time they have dedicated to developing their ideas, recording and thoughtfully editing their work, prior to entering the competition.
