Charity Dance

Category: Community, General, Pupil Achievements

On Saturday 12th March a Lower Sixth, led by Maddie Kirkwood (EL L6), hosted a dance in the Bradleian for members of the Remove and Hundred to raise money for the Charity Operation Smile.

This was an independent charitable initiative, planning for which began last term. It is wonderful to commend such efforts amongst Marlborough pupils – and super to be able to support them through the structure for weekend social events.

Pairs of houses were given themes, including “Bollywood”, “Double Denim”, “Prep School Disco” – and responded with relish in most cases, with a magnificent display of lycra, fluorescent tops, Indian silks, as well as some hard hats, sports vests and other weird and wonderful gear on show.

The members of Team Smile had decorated the Brad, laid on fizzy drinks and lollies, and set up a photo booth, which proved a hit on the night. They had also worked hard to publicise the event in advance and sell tickets to raise money for the charity: a terrific £416 was raised. This will pay for 2  ½  operations for children with cleft lips and cleft palates.

Organiser Maddie Kirkwood commented: "We are so thankful for all the support and donations we have received and are very glad to be spreading awareness about Operation Smile and their generosity."

The Charity website can be found via www.operationsmile.org.uk, and next term a speaker from the Charity is coming to talk to Marlborough pupils about their work. Hopefully Maddie and her team can go on raising funds and supporting their work for several years to come.
