Wind Department Concert

Category: Music, Events

The annual Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Department Christmas Concert is always a joyous affair, in part because it marks the conclusion to a long and busy term of music making, but mainly because it features such a sparkling array of talent, both in an individual and collective capacity. The concert in the Memorial Hall on Monday 10th December was no exception; it was expertly directed, delivered and presented by the evergreen Head of Department Alex Arkwright with notable visiting music teacher contributions form Hayley Lambert, Sacha Johnson and Bernie Aitken.

The Big Band kicked things off with a tight and smoky performance, Sophie Lawson Turnbull (NC L6) was mesmerising in her marimba solo, the Junior Jazz Band was really impressive as stars for the future, the Percussion Ensemble demonstrated huge interest and depth in that area with their collective performance, the bagpipers filled the hall with a stirring rendition of traditional numbers and the evening closed with the massed forces of the Marlborough College Wind Orchestra (Brasser), the highlight of which was Robert Sheldon's 'Choreography', where Mr Arkwright skilfully coaxed a superb range of character and colour from this most talented ensemble.

A fitting conclusion to a marathon but highly successful term of passionate, varied and inspired music making - well done all.
