Music Scholars Recital at the The Merchant’s House

Music Scholars' Recital

Category: Music

A traditional curtain raiser to the musical events of the academic year at the College is a September ‘dry run’ recital for Scholars in preparation for the annual Music Scholars Gala Concert in London in October.  Over the years this preliminary gig has taken place within the College or in local venues and has proved invaluable and worthwhile in promoting high standards.  This year that concert took place in the panelled room of The Merchant’s House, an intimate but perfect setting for such an occasion.  Notwithstanding the early stage of the year this was a full bodied, diverse and dynamic programme, mixing solo and chamber items to good effect to a packed house.  The Merchant’s House doesn’t possess a piano (only a spinet) which tends to limit accompanied repertoire to the Baroque era, but with unaccompanied ensembles providing balance in music by Puccini, Dvorak and Richard Rodney Bennett amongst others, the evening proved a delightful blend of styles and genre.

Overall, a fantastic opening presentation from a talented group of pupils, who once again proved terrific ambassadors for the College in a town/gown promotion.
