Michaelmas Term Music

Category: Music

The Michaelmas term is a particularly rich and exciting time of musical opportunity and offers pupils and audiences an enticing and intoxicating blend of style, covering all ages and stages within the Music Department.

The Chapel Choir is a regular weekly performer and highlights are abundant, especially in the second half of term, with the Advent Carol Service on 27 November and the four Christmas Carol Services which take place over the weekend beginning Friday 9 December.

A variety of recitals and gala performances are also worth noting, both within the College community and elsewhere, including an Evening Pupils’ Recital, a 10th anniversary gala concert (tickets here) to commemorate the untimely death of OM Tom ap Rhys Pryce, the prestigious Music Scholars’ Gala Concert at London’s Royal Over-Seas League as well as our annual appearance at the Calne Festival.

The eagerly anticipated whole school House Song Competition takes place the night before half term, preceded by the more tricky and exposed House Harmony the week before. Further interest is provided through the Remove and Shell Wind Orchestra concert in November, a cross-departmental collaboration with languages in an Advent Celebration recital and the term comes to a close with the buoyant and colourful Symphony Orchestra and Wind Department concerts, both of which are scheduled for December.  All pupils feature in the informal weekly lunch time recital series (Thursdays from 22 September, 1.40pm Goodison Hall) whilst the prestigious Marlborough College Concert Series promotes world class musicians in a series of three concerts:  Wolf Hall Live! with award-winning composer Debbie Wiseman, the eminent solo pianist Paul Turner and the Band of the Grenadier Guards – an irresistible concoction of fabulous music making, which one hopes will be an inspiration to all.
