Choral Evensong at St Paul's Cathedral

Category: Music, General, Community

Members of the Chapel Choir were privileged to return to St Paul's on Tuesday 25th April to sing Evensong, our third visit in as many years.

The awe-inspiring building provides both rewards and challenges to singers: there's nothing quite like hearing a perfectly tuned 'Amen' sail around the cavernous church for 7 or 8 seconds; at the same time the acoustics can make one feel rather musically isolated. The Chapel Choir rose to the occasion splendidly, singing Byrd's Second Service and, in celebration of the Feast of St Mark, Leighton's little-known masterpiece Give me the wings of faith. Particular kudos to our Heads of Choir, Helena Mackie (MO U6) and Jonny Venn (C3 U6) for taking on solo roles with confidence and skill.

After the service, the Chamber Choir entertained Old Marlburians at a reception held just down down the hill at St Martin-within-Ludgate. A wonderful way to end a wonderful day of music-making. Congratulations to all of the singers, and special thanks to our College Organist, Mr Ian Crabbe.
