Lacrosse National Schools Tournament

The Lacrosse 1st XII have just returned from a competitive few days at the National Schools Tournament held at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Below is a review by Lucy Goodman (LI U6).

After several days of action, the result was a satisfying end to the weekend as Marlborough made Division 2 for the second time in history.

Friday brought the sun alongside two wins with some intense matches and an all-round optimum performance from the team. The defence, midfield and attack worked coherently and hold their own against some tough teams, namely Guildford, who went on to enter into the Championship Division.

Each member of the team contributed their all and, from the captain’s perspective, put up a valiant fight. Both on and off the pitch the optimism was evident leading to many compliments from opposing teams on how smart and unified we presented ourselves. In accordance with tradition we were taken out as a team for a supper, confirming the strong bond that has developed between each representative of the team over the past two terms.

The fighting spirit was, once again, noticeable on Saturday where were we managed to seal second place in our seeded group, a fantastic achievement, especially with some stiffness and fatigue. However, aided by the large network of support on the side, as a team we played better than we ever have. It was a frustrating disappointment when we were finally knocked out by Shrewsbury but all credit must go to Lettie, our top goal scorer, for slipping one past the goalkeeper.

Overall it was a memorable weekend and our thanks must be extended to our incredible coaches for preparing us, taking us and standing by us throughout the highs and lows.

It was the best end to a great season and for the Upper Sixth an emotional but perfect way to leave and remember Marlborough Lacrosse!
