Master in Charge of Rugby, Budge Pountney, reviews the U18s Sexey’s Sevens Tournament that took place on Thursday 10th March…

We went to Sexey's yesterday knowing that we had pressure to retain the cup that has been won in the previous years. What we also knew was that we had a very handy squad that has been coached incredibly well by Steve Clayton this season.

The team was drawn in a group of five other teams of which there were differing levels of ability and physical conditioning. The team remained focussed on their performance per match and were duly rewarded with some outstanding results, irrespective of who they were playing.

The groups stages looked like this:

v Wells Cathedral 59-0
v Clayesmore 29-0
v Sexey's 50-0
v Sherborne 31-5
v Wellsway 64-0

The team went into the semi-final against a second Sherborne side looking to make a statement and won the game with a score of 45-7.

Meanwhile Beechen Cliff had been doing a similar thing in the other group and they made it through their semi-final.

The final started pretty badly with Beechen Cliff racing into a 14-0 lead and although the team and had a number of good breaks they couldn't finish off the pressure with a score, the score line remained the same at half-time.

The boys were convinced that if they could finish off the line breaks that they were making they had the better of Beechen Cliff (a state school feeder for the Bath Rugby Academy). After a sustained period of pressure Beechen Cliff had a player yellow carded which proved the way back in. Henry Martin (PR U6) scored immediately followed by captain Will Beattie (SU U6). The game was on an edge at 12-14 to Beechen Cliff when Ben Wilson (BH U6) pulled a rabbit out of the hat and chipped the oncoming defence and scored to take the lead and essentially win the game.

It was a fantastic squad effort from all the boys and it was great to see them show grit and determination in the final to come back, especially given we had played won more game than Beechen Cliff.

Top try scorers were:

Henry Martin (10), David West (5), Rupert Edgedale (5), Will Beattie (5)

Men of the tournament award went to Martin and Henry Kirkman with special mention to Alfie Farndale and Mason Hunt, our only Hundred player in the squad.

Squad: Will Beattie (Captain, SU U6), Toby Baines (BH L6), Sam Bradby (SU L6), Jay Cooke (PR L6), Rupert Edgedale (SU U6), Alfie Farndale (SU U6), Mason Hunt (C3 Hu), Henry Kirkman (C3 U6), Henry Martin (PR U6), Tom Mayes (TU L6), Max Read (TU L6), David West (TU L6), Ben Wilson (BH U6)
