National Schoolgirls' Fives Championships

The College hosted the National Schoolgirls' Fives Championships this weekend.

We went into the event with high hopes in the U16s and U14s. Rosie Sykes (EL Sh) came closest to a trophy - she beat fellow Marlburian Kirsten Bell (MO Sh) in a nail-biting semi, and came away with a silver medal as runner-up, emulating the achievement of her fellow Elmhurstian Maya Jeveons (EL Re) last year. Alice Wood (MO Sh) and Beth Ransome (IH Sh) took bronze by winning the plate competition.

Anna Laakonnen (MO Hu) and Ibby Lee (NC Hu) played some of the best Fives ever seen from Marlborough girls, but had the misfortune to run up against some very strong U16 Rugbeians. In both the singles and doubles, they got to the sharp end of the tournament before going down fighting.

None of the big cups this year, sadly, but what a treat to see seven Marlborough girls playing the game at the biggest event of the year with skill, guts and enjoyment.
