Alfred St George Hamersley

Category: Rugby, General

With the Six Nations getting under way this weekend, this is an opportune moment to highlight the influence of Alfred St George Hamersley (C3 1862– 66).

Hamersley was a former Marlborough pupil and England international of the 1870s who was a pioneer of rugby in New Zealand after he emigrated to work as a lawyer.

In 2015, the ‘XV’ rugby pitch was renamed ‘Hamersley’ whilst an engraved stone – pictured – was also installed at the top of the steps leading up to the games field to leave a lasting legacy.
