Rugby v Marlborough – Saturday 12th August 2017 at Lord’s

A quite superb game of cricket, befitting of the venue and the combined total of 625 years of school history being celebrated, saw Marlborough emerge winners by 25 runs in a topsy-turvy encounter packed with drama.

Put into bat, Marlborough recovered from a catastrophic start to post a competitive 270 for 6 from 50 overs, having been 8/3 and 110/6 at precarious stages of the innings. This was largely due to Max Read’s outstanding 141 not out, with crucial contributions from Elijah Samuel (40) and David West (58*). Read showed enormous resolve and reveled in the enormity of the occasion to post his highest score for Marlborough on the biggest stage after four years in the XI.

Rugby’s reply stuttered right from the start, with David West removing the dangerous opposition captain in the opening over. In an incredible afternoon for the all-rounder, West tore through the top order as Rugby were reduced to 30 for 5. However, a tremendous rearguard by their Scotland U19 international Fin McCreath and Will Hardman, with a 6th wicket partnership of over 150, brought them back into contention.

Captain Billy Mead led the side with conviction and maturity and it was his crucial interventions, by bowling Hardman and catching McCreath on the deep mid-wicket boundary, that eventually swung the pendulum Marlborough’s way.

The game was played in fantastic spirit which epitomised the fierce rivalry, but strong friendship and camaraderie that exists between the two cricketing schools. Neither side deserved to lose and cricket was very much the winner, as these privileged group of school pupils enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience playing on the hallowed turf of the most famous cricket ground in the world.
