George Johnson Completes Sky Dive for Children's Charity

Category: General, Community

After a long wait for suitable weather and much anticipation, 84-year-old George Johnson finally took to the skies to dive for The Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.  The effort to raise money for the hospital enlisted the help of local sponsorship, including The Queen's Head Pub and Marlborough College (his employer for the last 58 years, starting in 1953). George also worked in the Marlborough Fire Department for 32 years (1949-1981).

George completed the jump with his friends, Sarah Nash and Tracy Drake. When asked about the jump he responded enthusiastically saying, "It was absolutely superb. I didn't have an adrenaline rush or nerves, I just went for it."

George recommends the experience to everyone, and added that "you will be in great hands and have nothing to worry about." George completed his jump with a member of the Red Devils Parachute team, and his skill was apparent as he boasted that he landed on his feet to complete the day.  Upon reflection, George commented that he couldn't have wished for a better day or a better cause.

In addition to the lunch time fundraising in Norwood Hall and donations through the various boarding houses of Marlborough College, the Music Scholars also contributed to the cause. Their Chamber Concert which was performed in Chard on Sunday 2, October helped to raise £250 which will also be donated to the Charity. In total, George expects to raise around £1,000. He would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions.
