At the suggestion of the Marlborough Brandt Group, Nicholas Sampson, Master of Marlborough College, commissioned the construction of a special beacon to be lit at the College at 10.26pm on Monday, June 4 as part of the local and nationwide celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The College beacon joined the chain of celebratory fires lit around the Marlborough area: Barbury racecourse, Martinsell Hill, Inkpen and elsewhere. It was located on the north face of Granham Hill, directly above the White Horse.
The lighting was attended by a small group of local people and staff from Marlborough College. The evening will be remembered for the visual spectacle, intense heat and sense of celebration at the sight of the beacons at Barbury and Martinsell on distant hilltops.
