Sir John Betjeman's "Summoned by Bells"

Category: General

Each pupil at the College is being given, as a present,  a copy of this special limited edition of Sir John Betjeman's (B2 1920-25) famous poetical memoir "Summoned by Bells" by The Master, as they complete the Whole School Walk this Sunday.

Covering Betjeman's time at Marlborough, these iconic poems have been published in a new edition exclusive to Marlborough College by the poet's famous publishing house John Murray to celebrate Marlborough's 175th anniversary.  The volume is clothbound in Marlborough blue with OM red end papers, and stylish silk ribbed head and tails.
Most appositely Tim Betjeman, John's grandson, was "Artist in Residence" last year and contributed drawings of the college for this edition. Dr Michael Ponsford has written the foreword and The Master the preface. Dr Simon McKeown is the artist for the dust jacket which Ian Leonard then designed digitally for the printers.
The Betjeman Trustees kindly gave permission for this special edition and a portion of profits made from its sale will go to the Betjeman Poetry Prize, a charity in the education sector working with partners across the United Kingdom to promote literacy, foster creativity and provide a platform for new voices from the next generation.
John Murray, publishers, undertook the changes to make this a distinctive and highly prized edition.

Additional copies are available in person at Crosby and Lawrence (£15) and will be available via the online shop from 9am, Tuesday 19th September.
