13th September 2009  Malones v First XV

Match played on Sunday 13th September 3:00pm on the First XV Pitch against the School. Thank you to all those who supported.

About Us

Alex Greer was the best rugby player that Marlborough has ever seen. He played for the XV in the hundreds and has played for the wasps academy team, was a pivotal member of the England U17 development squad, and played regularly for Maidenhead 1st XV. He was unfortunately in C2, but enjoyed his Marlborough career and played furious games of Croquet on Sundays in fancy dress. In spite of this he was made a prefect and was quite often very well behaved. Alex studies French and Spanish at Kings in London. He is currently spending a year in Spain and careful to avoid the word holiday, he is referring to this as his third year at university. Last year he was the top try scorer in the London university leagues, and everyone should be aware of this. Some say that when Brad Pitt played Achilles in Troy he modeled his body upon Alex. His vast talent, both as a rugby player and an organizational mastermind has not been equaled since the Golden age when men walked with Gods.

Mike Roberts was the only rugby player that Marlborough has ever seen who was better than Alex Greer. He captained the 2002 XV, who beat Radley 27-18 and played for England U16's and divisionally at U18's. Despite rumors that circulated, stating that Mike is not actually very good at rugby, he is still very much at an international standard. Unfortunately he is usually very busy on Saturdays and so cannot play for England in the up and coming internationals. Mike was lucky enough to be in Turner, a house that was originally built by the wondering descendants of the Kings of Atlantis. Like Alex, he enjoyed dressing up immensely but was always more of a fives player. He currently studies Classics at Newcastle University and plays for the Larrikins 1st XV. Whilst the secretary is abroad, the unfairly gifted Mike is taking over certain duties as well as being treasurer and captain of the club. We are all looking on in awestruck admiration of his incredible ability to do anything. Wow!

About the Club

The Marlborough Malones Old Boys Rugby Club was set up by the Rugby XV of 2002 so that Old Marlburian rugby players could continue to socialise and play good rugby with one another years after leaving. It is named after Molly Malone, the beautiful Irish woman who features in the great victory song of this generation of Marlburians, 'cockles and muscles.' The Club played its first official match on September 11th 2005 against Radley College at Marlborough. This is set to become a highly competitive annual event hosted by each college in turn.

The Malones is a charitable club, supporting the Samantha Dickson trust and the building of Tom's ward at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. These are the chosen charities of the families of Hugo McDermott and Tom Waley-Cohen, two Marlburians who sadly died so young of cancer. They were close friends of the founding members of the club and the enthusiasm and courage which they showed in life is something that the Malones wish to incorporate in all their activities. In its three years the club has raised £6000 for charity.

The club currently meets at an AGM (date to be decided), an annual supper, the Cronk-Cunis U21 rugby festival in London, the teddies 10 a side festival, the teddies 7 a side festival and for the memorial match against Radley. It has joined the C.L.O.B and will be sending teams to the C.L.O.B competition in London every year from now.

There are plans for fixtures in the North, using the many Marlburians available in Edinburgh, Durham and Newcastle as well as fixtures in London. These should become more frequent as the numbers of playing members in the club grow. The club is also hoping to host a 7 a side tournament late next summer at Marlborough College.

There are plans for a rugby tour to Ireland in 2008 and some members of the club have put forward inspirational ideas for travel to the Far East. Tours such as these are how the club wishes to progress.

Becoming a Member

To become a member, please send an email to malonesrfc@hotmail.co.uk, expressing your interest and we will add you to our mailing list, keeping you informed about all up and coming events. Membership is free until further notice; however there are match fees and participation fees, purely to cover costs. Anyone can join the club; however those who are not Old Marlburians need a recommendation from a playing member.

Malones T-Shirts, as seen in the team photo, are still available for all interested, at a cost of £10 – all further money raised being split between The Samantha Dickson brain tumour trust and Tom’s ward at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Notice Board

Any of you know of teams that you think might be evenly matched to an OM team whose fitness is at most, extremely average, please can you write in to Molly and let her know. We are looking for a fixture around March.

On the off chance! If any of you are looking for a jukebox that looks very sophisticated, there is a Seeburg model 6001, in perfect condition that a very important Malone investor is looking to find a safe home for.

Any of you who have fathers or older relatives who were OM's and interested in becoming members either to play or enjoy the company of old friends, please can you ask them for permission to forward details of events to them.

If any of you have contacts with other Old Boys clubs, can you send them in to add our invitation list to the 7's tournament.

If any of you have strong opinions about whether Tim Fosh is a far better or worse player since he left school, please can you make them public. There will be a debate about this in our next meeting.

Any of you who believe fervently that Tom Fish is a better player than Tim Fosh should also make their opinions heard.

There is currently a poll, looking into whether there has ever in the history of sport been a better team than the XV of 2002. Any of you who believe that this is not the case should make your opinions heard. The lack of any replies to this will result in the above statement becoming factual.
