STOP PRESS! Recent Event at Marlborough:

Old Marlburian vintage car buffs (That’s very definitely NOT the same as “petrolheads” is it ?!) will doubtless be pleased to know that Henry Frederick Stanley MORGAN (1894-95), the Founder and original Managing Director of the Morgan Motor Company, was an Old Marlburian!

The son of a Herefordshire clergyman, he was born on 11th August 1881 and arrived as a pupil at M.C. in May 1894. He was a member of Upcot House, a small junior boarding house which was situated west of Cotton House and which was closed in 1967.

Sadly, he was only at MC for 4 terms and so did not have time to carve out a glittering academic career here for himself. Perhaps he was already interested in engineering and fancied that he might learn more about that elsewhere ? We shall never know!

Henry Morgan ould no doubt have been amazed had he known that on Wednesday, 8th April, 2009, some 115 years after he left Marlborough, no less than 22 Morgan cars would parade around the College Court. The occasion was the annual rally of the Morgan Owners` Club which this year started at Marlborough and ended at Morgan`s original factory near Hereford. Among the participating drivers was Anthony Spender (PR 1953-57). The accompanying two photographs hint at the splendour of the occasion.
