Nick Maurice  (C3 1956-61)

Nick Maurice, Director of the UK One World Linking Association (UKOWLA), recently welcomed Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Marlborough House in London to launch UKOWLA’s new publication a Toolkit for Linking (see www.ukowla.org.uk ). This is a resource for schools, community groups, local authorities, hospitals, ethnic minority groups and others interested in forming long-term twinning partnerships with counterparts in the developing world, using the example of Marlborough town’s 25 year long link with the Muslim fishing community of Gunjur in The Gambia. Nick was instrumental in setting up this link with Bill Spray HM C1 and Littlefield and others in Marlborough.

Archbishop Tutu’s moving and amusing speech can be heard on the UKOWLA website.

Chris de Burgh  (CO 1962-66)

Chris de Burgh has been appointed an Ambassador for the Collaborative Intergovernmental Scientific Research Institute (CISRI) in support of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

Chris is advocating research into the use of a particular algae in the treatment of severe malnutrition. Spirulina, which in addition to helping the absorption of food from the intestine can itself be an important source of protein in the diet, brings about rapid recovery of children with malnutrition related diseases. It is a low cost product which can be used in emergency situations.
