Role within the committee

I suppose the most significant event during my year of office was that we changed the dates of the Club year. This meant, in effect, that I served for eighteen months, finishing in October instead of March. We had to get the support of all OM’s to make this change, which did help to update the database.

Otherwise key projects included persuading the Council to introduce sports scholarships, and focusing on ways of involving young OMs. In my year this manifested itself in organising a ‘Not so Old Marlburian’ party in London. Also in my year, but for which I can take no credit, we had on the Committee the very generous benefactor supporting the Mound.Key Projects During Presidency

 Personal Background

After my National Service I made my career in Lloyds and worked in the City for close on 40 years. Outside Lloyds I became a Liveryman of the Haberdasher’s Company and was Master in 1995. I was a Governor of the two Haberdashers Schools in Hertfordshire, ending up as Chairman for 5 years, finishing in 2004. I was also Chairman of the Royal Humane Society for 10 years, ending 2003. I sent 4 sons to Marlborough.

Comments/Notes

It is important to attract energetic OMs to the Committee, ideally covering a range of ages reflecting the constituency they serve. I would strongly recommend that the President Elect does as much as possible with the President so that he/she is familiar with the routine and gets to know OMs around the country; equally important his/her face is well know when staring his/her year.
