Julian Bickersteth

 TU 1971-75

Julian Bickersteth (TU 1971-75), Managing Director of International Conservation Services - based in Sydney - is currently working on an important conservation project at the South Pole.

Since 1999, his company has been undertaking the conservation of the contents of huts left by great explorers, including Scott and Shackleton. These huts contain some 15,000 artefacts including pony and dog harnesses, sleeping bags, clothing and large amounts of canned food! It is hoped this program will preserve the physical evidence of the explorers for at least another generation.

The project is part of a conservation program to mark the International Polar Year - marked over two years from March 2007 to March 2009 - and is funded by the Antarctic Heritage Trust of New Zealand
