Comments on an article in Aeroplane Magazine |
|
Air Vice-Marshal Sir John Severne (1939-43) writes. “I was interested to see the article in the January issue of ‘Aeroplane’ magazine headed ‘Lost and Found’ because it reminded me of a similar event in 1941 (or thereabouts) when I was in Cotton House, although this one had a happier ending. A Cotton OM had recently joined the Gunners as an Air Observation Post (AOP) pilot flying Austers. One Sunday afternoon he landed his aircraft in a field behind the house and joined us for tea. Naturally this caused much excitement. The 1928 incident looks as if it is much the same type of event. Did he pilot show off on departure and fly too low? Or was there some reason for the crash, an engine failure perhaps? If anyone recognises the 1928 event perhaps they could contact the Editor who will forward the details to the ‘Aeroplane’.
I was first taken up in 1935 at the age of 10 in a Gypsy Moth from West Malling near our home in Kent. From that day I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life and I was fortunate to have been able o spend 43 very happy years with the RAF, mostly in flying appointments or jobs associated with aircraft. For some years I had held a secret ambition to fly a Tiger Moth to celebrate my 80th birthday. I had learned to fly in that splendid aeroplane, which is the younger cousin of the Gypsy Moth, in 1944. Those were wonderful days. We had our heads in the fresh air, no radios, no hi-tech intercom (just an old fashioned speaking tube), no navigation aids other than a map and a very wobbly compass, no runways and, best of all, no Air Traffic Control! And all this in the beautiful Scottish Highlands from Scone, near Perth. I had not flown a Tiger for forty years and I was anxious to test the bicycle theory – once you can ride a bike, you can always ride a bike. I therefore persuaded Charlie Shea-Simmonds, who had restored a beautiful Tiger Moth which he keeps at Netheravon, to take me up last August to celebrate my 80th. I was gratified to find that it all came back to me as if it was yesterday. We had magical time!” |
