The Longest Climb

This is something extraordinary. This is, you might say, impossible. This is something that has never been done before. On Saturday June 26th 2010, Tom Lancaster and Jonathan Briggs will attempt to raise at least £10,000 for each of three charities: Amnesty International, HeartUK, and Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

They will be racing to climb the height of Mount Everest, 8,848m, in one stretch, at the Westway indoor climbing centre. To do this they will scale the 12m wall 738 times each, setting a new world record in the process. Ridiculous? Impossible? Moronic? Perhaps. But this is not just a vain attempt to steal the limelight and earn 15 seconds of fame, this is two friends trying to do some real good in the world, and with your help we can achieve it.

Tom Lancaster  (B1 1997-2002)

A childhood tree climbing addict, Tom started rock climbing at Marlborough College aged 14, under the watchful eye of Rupert Rosedale, who also taught him to kayak, mountain bike, build snowholes and generally enjoy the outdoors. Generally lazy unless being deliberately active, fitness is his main concern going into this challenge. He’s Looking forward to the personal challenge and raising as much money as possible! His climb is dedicated to the memory of Rupert, his friend and mentor, who recently passed away in an avalanche on Ben Nevis.

Jonny Briggs:

Having run the 2009 London Marathon in a pretty good time, Jonny should be going into this as the bookies favourite to win, despite his relative lack of experience on the climbing wall. Generally much more active than Tom, we don't need to worry about his fitness, however forearm strength may be an issue. He wants to improve his climbing technique and raise awareness of heart conditions through his support of HeartUK.
