Malones Match v Common Room
In stark contrast to the previous year’s inaugural fixture, the Malones arrived back at their alma mater in blazing sunshine. Their opposition for a second year, the ‘older’ Old Boys, plus some staff relics from Common Room, provided a decent opportunity for the Malones to run out before the well publicized Clifton sesquicentenary fixture.
It was possibly a foolhardy decision to attempt to match the Malones’ fast flowing brand of rugby, but the Old Boys certainly started brightly. Incursions from staff members John Swift (CR 2011-), Bill Nicholas (CR 1998- ) and Henry Jones (CR 2009-) provided some momentum, and certainly gave the Malones reason to believe that this would be no Sunday afternoon picnic.
However, it was not be long before the young legs found their stride. The Malones back line was close to the best that recent sides have offered and their forwards tormented us with rapier like attacks out wide. The Old boys did manage to stay in touch through a try via new grad assistant, Joe Moriarty, and almost staged a fight back, but Simon Quinn (CR 2005- ) was pulled back after his scorching break and adjudged to benefit from a forward pass.
This was a handy work out for the Malones, prior to the main event of their season at Clifton on September 29th. Our thanks go to Dr Chris Stevens for his exemplary refereeing performance and the OM Club for arranging the fixture.
