U14s make National Finals

On Saturday 30th January the U14, U16 and U19 netball teams headed down to Truro in Cornwall for the Regional Round of the National Schools Netball Championships.

The U19s put out a respectable performance in the first few rounds of the day. They won matches vs Bournemouth SG (10-7), Truro (8-7) and Richard Huish school (6-3). In the last three games of the group they fell short against Exeter College, Hartpury College and Royal Grammar School. Special mentions must go to Zinnia Satchell and Helena Hussey for their incredible defensive turnovers, providing the shooters with more opportunities.

Squad: Mimi Manning (LI U6), Breagha Campbell (MM L6), Bea Speelmans (Capt) (IV U6), Helena Hussey (LI U6), Laura Kirkpatrick (MM U6), Liv Hazlitt (MO U6), Georgia Gibson (EL L6), Matilde Speelmans (PR U6), Zinnia Satchell (EL L6)

Bournemouth SG (W 10-7)
Truro School (W 8-7)
Richard Huish (W 6-3)
Exeter College (L 4-8)
Hartpury College (L 6-7)
Royal GS (L 3-7)

The U16s topped their group, facing schools including Sherborne, Penair, Wycliffe, Haygrove, Colyton Grammar School and King Edward’s. They made it to the semi-final where they faced Millfield.

The girls put out an outstanding performance but couldn’t shut down the skilful 6ft opposition shooter. Despite narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Nationals, they fought for every ball and can be proud of their efforts. A special mention goes to Ellie Spark, for her turnovers and strength in defence. Lara Thompson showed great leadership and shooting accuracy throughout the day.

Squad: Lara Thompson (Captain) (IV Hu), Ellie Spark (MM Hu), Emily Boom (IV Hu), Martha Doyne (MO Hu), Zoe Combe (EL Hu), Phoebe Westgate (EL Hu), Millie McKelvey (EL Hu), Lara Beckett (MO Re), Scarlett Atkinson (NC Hu)

The U14s came top of their group, beating the likes of Canford, King’s College Taunton and Penryn College.

We then faced Cheltenham College in the semi-final and secured a 13-9 victory which secured qualification for the National Schools Finals in Brighton on Saturday 19th March.

Training for this tournament has been extremely demanding and it was great to see their hard work pay off. The girls were determined and fought until the final whistle, despite Harriet Eyles sustaining an ankle injury in the final match against Millfield. Finishing runner-up for the South West Region is an incredible achievement and shows how extremely talented this team is.

Special mention must go to Poppy Cripwell who scored 42 of our 53 goals and to Tate Oliphant for her movement and accurate passing, which created the opportunity for our success. Captain Mimi Greenplayed centre for the whole day and was solid in bringing the ball down the court and feeding into the shooters. Harriet Eyles made numerous interceptions and added a lot of pressure to our opponents making her the player of the day.

Squad: Tate Oliphant (MO Sh), Miranda Aitchison (MM Sh), Poppy Cripwell (MM Sh), Ali Cameron (MM Sh), Rosie Pembroke (EL Sh), Mimi Green (Captain) (MM Sh), Lily Pilkington (EL Sh), Harriet Eyles (MM Sh), Lila Greenwood (NC Sh)
