Review: Ben Kane

Classics Society Talk: The Life of a Roman Centurion

Ben Kane, best-selling author of the Forgotten Legion trilogy and Spartacus series, gave a fascinating talk to the Shell on Thursday 17th November.

His talk was about the life of a Roman legionary, encouraging the audience to examine his collection of beautifully crafted military equipment, from swords and helmets to surgical instruments and the original Swiss Army Knife.

Heaviest to lift was the 9kg chain mail, made of 20,000 steel rings, which Mr Kane has worn on charity walks, dressed in full Roman armour. No wonder his books evoke so powerfully the rigours of ancient warfare, and the sheer strength and iron discipline of the legionary soldier.
