European Day of Languages Quiz

The Modern Languages Department marked this year’s European Day of Languages on Tuesday 25 September by hosting a languages quiz afternoon for Year 8 pupils from local primary, prep and senior schools.

Teams from six local schools were welcomed to the Garnett Room by the Shell hosts, and after refreshments and cake and biscuits the quiz started. Questions ranging from “In which part of the British Isles is Manx spoken?” to “Which continent is home to the greatest number of languages?” taxed the linguistic knowledge of the teams, from Dauntseys, Downe House, Pinewood, St Francis, St John’s and Swindon Academy. Other rounds included ten current Marlburians each giving a short video presentation in their mother tongue, including, Turkish, Swedish, Mandarin and Urdu.

After a very close fought competition, third place was awarded to Swindon Academy, joint second place to Dauntsey’s and St John’s, and this year’s winners were Downe House. Mrs Julia Hodgson, Senior Admissions Tutor, presented the prizes and wished all the Year 8 pupils well in their continuing study of modern languages. Congratulations to these teams and to all who took part in an excellent afternoon of languages knowledge.

Many thanks too to all the Shell hosts, and to Mr Kiggell for his joint roles as organiser of the event and quizmaster.
